John McGill (1746-1797)

John McGill, Fur Trader, of Montreal, died unmarried

He was a younger brother of James McGill, founder of McGill University, Montreal. He had been granted a fur-trading licence in Canada in 1770, and spent that winter in Indian country according to his Beaver Club medal. By 1773, he had entered into partnership with his brother, James, and the following year he partnered with James Paterson. He then became a member of his brother's firm, Todd & McGill. He died unmarried at Montreal on December 1, 1797.
