Julius Izard Pringle (1808-1864)

of France, South Carolina & Newport, R.I.

He owned a home in Newport, Rhode Island, two Black River plantations (Greenfield & White House), and a house in France where he resided with his family before the Civil War. On the outbreak of war, his three sons broke off their studies in Heidelberg in Germany to join the Charleston Light Dragoons. His wife, Jane, was the daughter of the famous epicurean Dominick Lynch, of New York, and caused quite a stir in society when she appeared in her father's box at the opera with a green snake wrapped around her wrist - the story of which is told in her biography.
