John Joseph Forsyth-Grant (1840-1884)

Major John Joseph Forsyth-Grant, of Cheltenham

He was born in Montreal and grew up at Ecclesgreig Castle. He was commissioned into the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and served in Malta, North America, Bermuda and Gibraltar. In 1876, he married Anne, daughter and heiress of John Littleton of Trewin House, Sheviock, Cornwall. In 1882, After he was granted a divorce (and custody of their two sons) on account of Anne's infidelity with her parents’ coachman. In the same year, he contracted dysentery and was nursed until he was well enough to return home to recuperate. After several months leave he rejoined his regiment but just the following year (1883) caught dysentery again and he was forced to abandon his military career. Back in England, he lived with his sister, Eweretta, on Park Place in Cheltenham where he died of his illness in 1884. His sons were left in Eweretta's care.
