John Hull Browning (1841-1914)

of New York City; President of the Northern Railroad & Mayor of Tenafly, New Jersey

He was born in Orange, New Jersey, and brought up in New York City. After graduating from the New York Free Academy, he joined his two elder brothers in the family's wholesale clothing business until 1883. He succeeded his father-in-law as President of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey (resigning in 1897 after it was bought out by the Erie Railroad) and President of the Richmond County Gas Light Company. He was Mayor of Tenafly, N.J., President of the Bergen County Republican League and a Presidential Elector in 1892 and 1896. He was a director of Barrett Nephews & Co., the City National Bank of Englewood, New Jersey, and the Eerie Railroad. In 1871, he married Eva, daughter of the controversial Charles G. Sisson, and they had one son. They lived between New York City and the summer home he built at Tenafly (see images).
