John Hazard Browning (1801-1877)
Founder of Browning King & Co., Clothing Manufacturers, New York City
He was born in North Stonington, Connecticut, and went into business as the owner of a general store at Middletown that sold yarns, produce, and merchandise. By 1830, he moved his store to New London and three years later he established himself in New York City as the owner of a wholesale dry goods establishment. During the Californian Gold Rush (1849), he opened a store in San Francisco, and later settled in the south where he died.
