John DeWolf (1786-1862)

John “Fessor” DeWolf, of Bristol, R.I., Professor of Chemistry at Brown University

He was born at Bristol, Rhode Island, the son of "Farmer John" DeWolf. He was a distinguished scholar in English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Ethics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Astronomy. He was the author of many popular poems in his day but is perhaps best remembered as the Professor of Chemistry at Brown University from 1817 until circa 1837. He was married three times and the father of six children.
