Jefferson Davis (1808-1889)

President of the Confederate States & U.S. Senator from Mississippi

His first wife, Sarah, was the daughter of U.S. President Zachary Taylor. Her father opposed her becoming a soldier's wife, but they were married nonetheless. However, she died of cholera just three months after they were married in 1835. In 1845, he married his second wife, Varina, daughter of Lt. William B.
