James Alexander Hamilton (1718-1799)

James Hamilton, of St. Croix & Nevis, West Indies

He was the younger son of a Laird and emigrated to the West Indies to seek his fortune, becoming a merchant at St. Christopher. He was unable to marry his partner, Rachel Faucette, as she was divorced from John Levine, of St. Croix, and the courts had forbidden her to remarry. By her, James had two sons. He was unsuccessful in business and filed for bankruptcy. After Rachel died in 1768, their children were sent to her family in St. Croix where the sons entered the counting house of Nicholas Cruger.
