Kerelaw Castle
Kerelaw Castle, Stevenston, Ayrshire
Built circa 1191 and remodelled in 1488. In 1655, Kerelaw was purchased by John Hamilton who renamed the castle Grange and became styled "of Grange". John was the great-grandfather of James Hamilton (1718-1799) who grew up at Grange before settling in the West Indies. His son, Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), was the celebrated American statesman who named his home Hamilton Grange in recognition of his ancestral home. Kerelaw has been a ruin since the second half of the 19th century.
