James Codwise (1772-1861)

Sugar Planter, of "Mount Victory" (aka Mt. Pleasant Plantation), Island of Saint-Croix

He was an alcoholic and a degenerate gambler who spent all of the his wife's considerable dowry that had included a ship and a plantation (Mount Victory) that he mortgaged to the hilt.
