James Alexander Hamilton (1788-1878)

Acting U.S. Secretary of State, of "Nevis" Ardsley-on-Hudson, New York

He was born in New York City and graduated from Columbia College (1805). During the War of 1812, he served as Brigade-Major and Inspector of the New York State Militia. Becoming an Attorney, he was a respected member of the New York Bar and was appointed Master of Chancery, acting U.S. Secretary of State (1829), and U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1829-1834). In 1810, he married Mary Morris, great-granddaughter of Lewis Morris, 2nd of Morrisania, Speaker of the New York General Assembly. They were the parents of five children (listed) and in 1835 he built "Nevis" (pictured) at Ardsley-on-Hudson near Irvington, New York.
