Isaac Chanler (1750-1802)
Dr Isaac Chanler, of Charleston; President of the Medical Society of South Carolina
He was born at Charleston, South Carolina. He received a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh and on returning to Charleston practiced as a physician before co-founding what would become the Medical University of South Carolina. During the Revolution, he served as a Surgeon with the Continental Army. He lived at 54 Broad Street and in 1800 was elected President of the Medical Society of South Carolina. By his first wife, Elizabeth Huntley, he was the father of three children: the Rev. Dr John White Chanler; Mary, Mrs Marshall; and, Sarah, Mrs Logan. In 1800, he married the widowed Catherine McCord, but died two years later while visiting Scotland. His portrait is kept in the collection of the Waring Historical Library at Charleston.
