He was the son of Captain Hugh Lyle, of Coleraine, an officer in the Dragoons, and his wife Eleanor Bankhead, daughter of Hugh Bankhead of Kilotin, Co. Londonderry. Hugh Lyle's sister, Elizabeth, married Hugh Carmichael (1720-1776) and they were the parents of Lt.-General Sir Hugh Lyle Carmichael (1764-1813).
