Henry Winthrop Sargent (1810-1882)
Horticulturist & Landscape Gardener, of "Wodenethe" Beacon, New York
In the late 1830s, he was a partner in Gracie & Sargent who acted as the New York agents of his uncle, the eminent banker Samuel Welles of Welles & Co., Paris. After giving up business, he married Caroline, the only child of Frank Olmsted whose old house (that Sargent then owned, inherited by marriage) had become better known by the 1860s as the building occupied by P.T. Barnum for his museum. Sargent leased the house to the entertainer for $10,000 net per annum.
