Henry Walton (1768-1844)

Judge Henry Walton, of Ballston & Saratoga Springs, New York

He was born in New York City. In 1780, he was sent to England, under the guardianship of Peter Van Schaick (the intimate friend of Sir William Johnson), to be educated. Eight years later he returned to New York, studied law under Aaron Burr, and then moved to Ballston where he was county surrogate and built "Delavan Farm." In Albany he built "Pine Grove" and on inheriting land at Saratoga Springs he added to it and became one of the largest landowners there, building "Wood Lawn." He was usually called "Judge Walton" and was described as, "a tall, fine-looking man... truly gentlemanlike in his manners and feelings, and possessed the faculty of binding to himself in close social ties the educated and the refined." He died in New York.
