Henry Powell (1741-1781)

Farmer, of Hempstead, Queen's County, New York

He was a farmer. During the Revolution, he was sailing across Long Island Sound with his thirteen year old son, James, to take their goods to market when the boat capsized in a storm. Henry had been pulling the boat along the bank on horseback, but when he saw James struggling to keep grip of the fallen mast he dived in to save him. They both drowned.
