Henry LeGrand Cannon (1858-1895)

Sculptor & Collector, of 60 Fifth Avenue, New York City & Burlington, Vermont

He was a prominent amateur sculptor who studied under Jonathan Scott Hartley and Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was described in the annals of Vermont as, "one of the most brilliant and promising American sculptors of his day." He was born in New York City, and studied art before focusing on sculpting and made his debut at the National School of Design in 1884 displaying a medallion portrait. His subsequent exhibits at the Academy were: "Portrait Bust of Miss K." (1885); "Figure of an East India Coolie" (1888); and, two notable portrait busts "Miss W." (1888) and "Miss H." (1889). In 1890, he won the plaudits of the Society of American Artists for his bronze bas-relief portrait of Gladys Vanderbilt. In Chicago, at the Columbia Exposition of 1893, he was represented by a bronze bas-relief portrait of his wife. Shortly before his death, at the exhibition held at the Union League Club in 1895, he displayed three busts, one of which was in bronze. Among other fine examples of his bas-relief work were busts of the children of Mrs. Seward Webb and medallion panels of the children of Elliott Shepard.

He amassed a large collection of weapons, armor, etc., on his travels, notably from East India and Java, and he was a member of Union League Club and the Knickerbocker Club. After his premature death, his family donated his collection of arms, armor etc. to the University of Vermont, and they were later moved to the the Fleming Museum.
