Henry Edwards Huntington (1850-1927)

Henry E. Huntington; Owner of the Pacific Electric Railway & Art Collector

He retired in 1910 and by 1917 had spent over $6-million collecting books. In 1920, he established and endowed the Henry E. Huntington & Art Gallery in San Marino, California. In 1921, he spent $728,000 purchasing The Blue Boy by Gainsborough. He had four children (listed) by his first wife. He shocked society in 1913 when he divorced his wife to marry his uncle's widow, Belle Huntington. He lived in the Huntington Mansion in California; his uncle's mansion at No.2 57th Street in New York City; “The Homestead” at Throggs Neck in Westchester Co., New York; and, the Chateau Beauregard at La Celle-Saint-Cloud in Paris. At one time in the early 1900s, he was the largest landowner in California.
