Hartman Kuhn (1784-1860)

of 1118 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (Class of 1800). As a Captain, he was one of the original members of the "State Fencibles" raised by Col. Clement C. Biddle in the War of 1812, and he was on the committee that planned the defense of the harbor and ports on the River Delaware. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania from 1836 until his death. In 1818, he married Ellen, daughter of James Lyle, of The Woodlands, Philadelphia. In 1830, he built what would become known as the Kuhn-Baldwin mansion at 1118 Chestnut Street (see images) and he and his wife were the parents of nine children.
