Harry Clay Adler (1865-1940)

Chairman & General Manager of 'The Chattanooga Times' Tennessee

He was born in Philadelphia. His brother-in-law, Adolph Ochs, owned The Chattanooga Times and bought The New York Times in 1896. Adler served as Chairman and General Manager of the former paper from 1901. He was Chairman of the Southern Division of the Associated Press (1917-1922) and was considered the "Father" of Chattanooga's commission form of government. He helped organize the Citizens' League and used it and the editorial columns of his newspaper to campaign against entrenched politics. He was active in charities and for three years was a President of the Mizpah Congregation at Chattanooga. He was the father of Gen. Julius Ochs Adler.
