Gerrard John Forsyth (1830-1876)

Major Gerrard John Forsyth, of the 57th Foot

He was born at Montreal and was commissioned into the 57th Foot in 1848. He served with distinction during the Crimean War. He saw action at the Battles of Balaklava, Inkerman, Sebastapol, and the Quarries, and led the storming party at the Redan and at Kinboum. He was decorated with the Grand Cross of Commander of the Legion of Honor by Napoleon III, with the Sardinian War Medal and with the Victoria Medal of Clasps. He married Elizabeth, daughter of John Horseley of the Madras Civil Service, whose first husband, Edmund Byng, was a grandson of 5th Viscount Torrington.
