George Savage (1767-1845)

Clockmaker & Jeweller, of Huddersfield, London & Montreal

His father, George Savage (b.1730), was a weaver at Howden before serving as a Corporal with the 23rd Foot (1750-57), but after losing his limbs became a watch repairman at Huddersfield. As a watch and clockmaker as well as a jeweller and silversmith, he had premises for the former on New Street and for the latter on Market Place, Huddersfield. He opened further premises in London and Montreal (1818) but in 1822 was declared bankrupt in England and moved permanently to Montreal. His business there became the city's largest retail jeweller and silversmiths. In 1787, he married Hannah Whiteley at Elland, West Yorkshire, and they had at least three sons (listed).
