George Richmond Fearing (1839-1920)
Col. George R. Fearing, of New York & Newport; President of Knickerbocker Club
He grew up between New York and Newport. He became Colonel of the Newport Artillery Company and during the Civil War served on the staff of General Ambrose E. Burnside. He lived at 998 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and in 1916 he succeeded Egerton Winthrop to become the fifth President of the Knickerbocker Club, serving until his death when he was succeeded by W. Butler Duncan. At Newport he built The Orchard and co-founded the Newport Casino. On his death, he left trusts of $1.35 million to his wife and only son.
