George Newbold (1780-1858)
President of the New York Bank of America & the Society of the New York Hospital
He was a Quaker and a merchant in New York in 1812 when he was made a director of the New York Bank of America. During the Jackson administration he supported the withdrawal of federal funds from the Second Bank of the United States, ensuring his own bank's profitability as a leading "pet" institution. He became President of the bank in 1832 and served until his death, described as, "the guiding genius of the Bank of America, who was a leader among the New York bankers as late as 1837." He was the 10th President of the Society of the New York Hospital from 1833 to 1857, and a Member of the New York Manumission Society from 1804 until at least 1838. He married twice: In 1807, Mary Emlen, and after her death he married Ann Fox in 1829. He had five children by his first (three of whom survived infancy) and a son by his second.
