George Meade (1741-1808)

Provisions Merchant & Slave Trader, of Philadelphia

He imported rum, sugar and slaves from the Barbados to Philadelphia. He was an agitator against the Stamp Act and signed the famous "non-importation resolution" in 1765. He served in the 3rd Battalion of Colonel Cadwalader's regiment during the Revolutionary War and as a Member of the Public Defense Association he gave $10,000 to sustain Washington's army at Valley Forge. In 1768, at Philadelphia, he married Henrietta, daughter of Richard Worsam, Eton-educated Member of His Majesty's Council in Barbados. They had ten children, all born in Philadelphia.
