George Henry Calvert (1803-1889)

Author & Mayor of Newport, Rhode Island

He was educated at Harvard and the University of Gottingen in Germany. He moved to Newport in 1843 and became its second elected Mayor and President of the Perry Monument Association. Considered a man of letters, he was a poet, dramatist, travel writer, art critic, translator, and biographer. He counted Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allen Poe, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow etc., among his friends. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. James Steuart, of Annapolis. They died without children.
