George Campbell Cooper (1840-1895)

of 113 East 21st Street, New York City; Secretary of the Peter Cooper Glue Factory

He was educated in the public schools of New York City and graduated from the New York Academy (the College of the City of New-York). He studied law, but never practiced. He joined the Seventh Regiment at the beginning of the Civil War and went to the front. After the war he became associated with his famous uncle, Peter Cooper (Founder of the Cooper Union), in the glue business. He belonged to the Tuxedo and Grolier Clubs, and was an authority on matters of art. He purchased and built the Cooper estate in Tuxedo Park in 1892, designed by Hoppin & Koen, which after his death he passed to his brother, Charles. His portrait was painted by John White Alexander.
