George Brown (1787-1859)

of Brown & Sons, Bankers, of Baltimore, Maryland

He was born in Northern Ireland at Ballymena, County Antrim. He came to America in 1802 and became a partner in the bank established by his father, Alexander Brown & Sons, at Baltimore. He succeeded his father as head of the firm in 1834. He co-founded the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and was for several years its treasurer. He was President of the Mechanic's Bank and one of the trustees of the Peabody Institute. He lived between Baltimore and his country estate, Mondawmin. In 1818, he married Isabella McLanahan and they were the parents of seven children, four of whom survived to adulthood: (1) Alexander Davison Brown (2) Grace, Mrs Edward McDonald Greenway Jr. (3) Isabella, Mrs William Hamilton Graham (4) George Stewart Brown
