Francis Randall Appleton Jr. (1885-1974)

Lt.-Col. Francis R. Appleton Jr., Lawyer, of New York City & Ipswich, Massachusetts

He was born at Lenox, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He was educated at Groton and graduated from Harvard College (1907) and Harvard Law School  (1910). He started his legal career with Winthrop & Stimson in New York City before establishing his own firm (Appleton, Rice & Perrin) in 1916. During World War I, he was Lieutenant-Colonel on the General Staff of the American Expeditionary Force. After peace was declared, he became a founder member of the American Legion. He lived between 700 Park Avenue and his family's country estate, Appleton Farms, at Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was survived by his English wife, Joan, but died without children.
