He was born at Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was married twice (1) In 1720, he married Hester, daughter of Christian McCarty, of Roxbury, Massachusetts. They had ten children, seven of whom (listd above) lived to adulthood. (2) After she died, in 1744 he married Katherine, daughter of John Winthrop and widow of Samuel Browne. They had five further children, two of whom (listed above) lived to adulthood.
