Ellen Crosby Roosevelt (1868-1954)

She was born at Rosedale in Hyde Park and was a first cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt. She grew up playing tennis with her sister Grace after her father laid out a grass tennis court at Rosedale. In 1890, she won the women's singles title at the U.S. Championships. In the same year, she also won the doubles title with her sister, Grace. They were the first pair of sisters to win the U.S. Championships and remained the only pair to do so until the Williams sisters equalled their achievement in 1999. At the 1893 U.S. Championships Ellen won the mixed Doubles title with Oliver Campbell. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1975. She was unmarried.
