Isaac Roosevelt House

Riverview Circle, Hyde Park, Dutchess County, New York

Built from 1832, for Isaac Daniel Roosevelt (1790-1863) and his wife, Mary Rebecca Aspinwall (1809-1886). He purchased land south of Hyde Park near to his father's estate, Mount Hope, and built the house - which he named Rosedale - on the crest of a hill overlooking the Hudson River. After Isaac died, ownership passed to his younger son, John Aspinwall Roosevelt (1840-1909), while his elder son, James, purchased Springwood, also in Hyde Park. John made a number of improvements to the property and is chiefly responsible for its present appearance. He also laid out a grass tennis court for his two daughters, Grace and Ellen, who went on to win the 1890 Women's U.S. Doubles Championship  - the only sisters to do so until the Williams sisters in 1999....

John also built the boathouse that still stands today. It was primarily used for his 68-foot ice yacht "Icicle" but was also shared by all of the extended Roosevelt family, including his young nephew, Franklin D. Roosevelt. After John died, he left Rosedale to his unmarried daughter, the Tennis Hall of Famer, Ellen Roosevelt (1868-1954), who continued to live here until her death in 1954. After her death, the estate was subdivided but the main house (still a private residence), boathouse and guest cottage still remain from its estate days.
