Elisha Dyer II (1811-1890)

Merchant & Banker, of Providence; 25th Governor of Rhode Island

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and graduated from Brown University in 1829. After completing his studies, he worked for his father in Elisha Dyer & Co., Commission Merchants, and was admitted a partner in 1831 and made agent for the Dyerville manufacturing company in 1835. He was elected Adjutant-General of Rhode Island (1840-45) and served on the Providence School Committee for over a decade. He was appointed 25th Governor of Rhode Island (1857-59) and served as a Captain in the Civil War. After the war, he became President of the Exchange Bank, Second Vice-President of the Rhode Island Art Association, and Rhode Island's Commissioner to the International Exhibition at London in 1871. In 1833, he married to Anna Jones Hoppin, maternal granddaughter of William Jones, 8th Governor of Rhode Island. They lived in his mansion (see images) on Power Street in Providence and had seven children (listed).
