Elias Shipman (1748-1823)

1st President of the New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Connecticut

He was one of the leading merchants at New Haven in Connecticut and became President of the New Haven Insurance Company. In 1784, his store was directly opposite the post-office on College and Chapel Streets. From 1788, he was Representative to the General Assembly of Connecticut and in 1794 he was elected as the first President of the New Haven Chamber of Commerce. After the War of 1812, he was granted a virtual monopoly for ten years to refine and manufacture loaf sugar.
