Theophilus Morgan (1732-1788)

West Indian Trader & Magistrate, of Killingworth, Connecticut

He was born at Killingworth, New London Co., Connecticut. Before the Revolution, he engaged in the West India trade and sold goods from what had been his father's store in Clinton, Connecticut. He imported rum and molasses that he sold to the public and wholesalers alike, and exported cattle, horses, hay, oats, staves, and hoops. Despite the disruption of his trade during the American Revolution, he became a wealthy man and on his death in 1788 his estate was valued in the region of £7,500. He married twice and had in total twelve children (eleven of whom lived to adulthood) plus one stepson by his first marriage, Elias Shipman.
