Edward Middleton (1641-1685)
"The Immigrant" of The Oaks Plantation; Deputy of South Carolina
He and his brother, Arthur, emigrated from London, England, to Barbados. In 1678, they emigrated again to South Carolina, eight years after the founding of Charleston. Appointed Lords Proprietor's Deputy and Associate Justice, Edward received large grants of land on Goose Neck Creek. In 1680, the Crown granted him a 1,000-acre plantation near Charleston on which he settled and named "The Oaks".
