Duncan McIntyre (1834-1894)
Dry Goods Merchant of Stuart, McIntyre & Co., etc., Montreal
He was born at Callender, Stirling, in Scotland and came out with his family to Upper Canada in 1849. He was the brother of Janet (McIntyre) Ferguson (1842-1934) and uncle to John McIntyre Ferguson who founded North Bay, Ontario. He came to Montreal to work for his uncle (Robert McIntyre) in Stuart, McIntyre & Co., Dry Goods Merchants & Wholesale Importers. From 1864, he succeeded his uncle as President of the firm that in 1884 became known as McIntyre, Son & Co. But the principal source of his wealth (estimated in 1892 to sit between $10 and $12-million) was through his investments, notably in railways, land and communication. He was President of the Windsor Hotel in Montreal, briefly (1882-84) Vice-President of Canadian Pacific Railway, and he co-founded the Royal Canadian Insurance Company and the Bell Telephone Company. In 1861, he married Jane Cassils (sister-in-law of Jonathan Hodgson) they were the parents of seven children.
