Duncan Campbell (1771-1840)
5th of Inverneill, Argyll; East India Company Judge & Opium Agent for Behar
He was born at St. John's, Co. Argyll, in Scotland and came to India with the East India Service in 1790. In August, 1814, he entertained the Governor-General of India, the Marquess of Hastings, who recorded in his private journal: On the 11th, "We landed (at Bankipore) and took up our quarters in the house of Mr. Duncan Campbell, who superintends the package of the opium here for the Company" On the 12th: "We had at night a splendid entertainment given by Mr. Campbell to the European ladies and gentlemen". On the 14th: "We had divine service at Mr. Campbell's. It was numerously attended". He succeeded to Inverneill after the deaths of his two elder brothers in 1822. In the same year, he returned to Europe as a Junior Member of the Board of Trade and retired from the Service in 1828. He was married at Calcutta in 1798 and had six children.
