Dr. George Snow Isham (1859-1926)

M.D., Surgeon & Academic, of 1340 North State Parkway, Chicago

He was born in Chicago and educated by private tutors before entering Yale and graduating (M.D., 1884) from Northwestern University. He continued his medical studies in Vienna (Austria) and interned at the Roosevelt Hospital, New York City (1884-85). From 1900, he practiced in Chicago and was the Attending Surgeon to the Passavant Memorial Hospital and the South Side and North Star Dispensaries. From 1888 to 1898, he was the first Assistant in Clinical Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School. He was named President of the Chicago Geographic Society; Vice-President of the Chicago Academy of Natural Sciences; Fellow of the Astronomical & Astrophysical Society of America; Member of the Chicago Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, and the Academy of Medicine.

Socially prominent, his social circle included Theodore Roosevelt and Robert Peary. He was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and was noted for his work in making scientific instruments for the astrophysical and astronomical observations at Yerkes Observatory, maintaining a complete workshop at his home. He was given an honorary M.A. from Northwestern (1887) and was President of University Club of Chicago (1910-13) and a director of the Lake Geneva Country Club. In 1892, he married Katherine, daughter of Henry Homes Porter, and had 3-children. Their 54-room mansion (see images) became famous in 1959 when he sold it to Hue Hefner, becoming the original Playboy Mansion.
