Collis Potter Huntington (1821-1900)

Railroad Baron and "Big Four" Co-Founder of the Central Pacific Railway

His mansion in San Francisco (see images) was originally built by David Colton and was one of the showpieces of the city in the 19th century, as were those of the others of the "Big Four": Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, and Mark Hopkins. He built the Huntington Mansion at No.2 57th Street & Fifth Avenue, New York City. He also kept “The Homestead” at Throggs Neck, Westchester Co., New York; and, the "Huntington Camp" at Camp Pine Knot on Racquette Lake in the Adirondacks. He was a founding member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
