Clara Jennings (Gregg) Hays (1859-1955)

Mrs. Clara Jennings (Gregg) Hays; Survivor of the RMS Titanic

She was travelling with her husband and daughter, Orian, on the Titanic as guests of the White Star Line's managing director, Bruce Ismay. She and her daughter survived, but she lost her husband in the disaster. When she was asked to sue the White Star Line for damages, she resolutely replied, "when one is a guest, one does not sue one's host." She lived for the rest of her life between 3626 Mountain Street (see images) in Montreal and her summer home on Cushing Island off Portland, Maine.
