Charles Stewart (1808-1849)
of Middletown, New Jersey; died unmarried
He was born at New York City, and in 1810 was promisingly described as, "a lively, well-taught fellow as any I have seen". By 1833, he was, "still prosecuting his studies in Paris" but by 1840 he was described in less glowing terms at which time he was living on a farm on the sea shore in Monmouth County, New Jersey: "he lives alone, being unmarried... he cares only for books and ease... he is eccentric, and likes to be thought so, neglects his farm, and is unpopular with his neighbors". He was the uncle of the famous Patron of the Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner, of Brookline.
