Charles Lanier Appleton (1886-1921)
Major Charles L. Appleton, of New York City
He was born in New York City and graduated from the Groton School (1904) and Harvard College (1908) where he was a member of the Porcellian Club, Sphinx Club etc. Having been employed with Maitland, Coppell & Co., in 1915, he went to Europe as Commander of the 1st Battalion, 367th Infantry and was cited in general orders for his conduct at Toul. In 1919, he personally returned the regiment's colors to the Union League Club which had given the colors before they embarked for France. He was a noted sportsman: he rode to hounds (notably at Myopia where his uncle was Master), took part in steeplechases and played polo at the Meadowbrook Club. He was a member of the Knickerbocker, Racquet & Tennis, Turf & Field, and the Downton Association. He lived with his parents at 26 East 37th Street, New York, and died of pneumonia, unmarried.
