Charles Henry Berryman (1833-1893)

"The Duke" of 661 Fifth Avenue, New York City & Newport, Rhode Island

He was born in New York City and graduated with high honors from Jefferson College. Like his father, he was considered a "strikingly handsome man" and in complement to his appearance and bearing he was known in society as "the Duke". He was a member of "The Four Hundred" and was named as one of the 52 "Patriarchs" of New York society. In 1860, he married Harriette Whitney who grew up at the Whitney Mansion in New Haven, Connecticut. She was a granddaughter of Stephen Whitney who in 1830 was named as one of New York's five millionaires. Charles Berryman died unexpectedly while summering with his family in Newport at 5 Cliff Cottage. His pallbearers were Carroll Livingston, Pierre Lorillard, James Otis, James Benkard, Col. E.M. Neill, Gardiner G. Howland, Dr. Morris Asch, William Redmond, J.H. Bradford, Col. Lawrence Kip, John Hunter and Samuel Borrowe. The Berrymans lived at 661 Fifth Avenue in New York City and they were the parents of three children (listed).
