Charles Eleazar Levey (1793-1880)
Charles E. Levey, Merchant & Banker, of "Cataraqui" Quebec
He was born and educated at Portsmouth in England. In 1813, he settled at Demerara in the West Indies where he bought a large sugar plantation. In 1828, after the slave rebellion, he chartered a ship and sailed to Quebec where his brother, Lionel, was extensively engaged as a lumber merchant. Lionel died the following year and left the entire business to Charles. Selling off his plantation in Demerara, he remained in Quebec and continued his brother's business until he retired in 1868. He was the founder and first President of the Union Bank of Lower Canada and a director (and largest shareholder) of the Quebec Gas Company. He lived between his townhouse on the corner of Rue Sainte-Anne and D'Auteuil and his country seat, Cataraqui. In 1847, at Holy Trinity, New York, he married Jemima, daughter of Rear-Admiral Edward Boxer R.N., C.B., and they had four children, two of whom (listed above) survived infancy.
