Charles Curtis (1860-1936)

31st Vice President of the United States (1929-33) & U.S. Senator from Kansas

He was born in the born in the Kansas Territory, an enrolled member of the Kaw Nation. He was the first Native American to serve in the United States Congress, representing Kansas (1893-1907). He served in the U.S. Senate from 1915 to 1929 and was the Senate Majority Leader from 1924 to 1929. He was the 31st Vice President of the United States (1929-33) under President Herbert Hoover, the first and only Native American and first multiracial person to fill that office.
