Charles Alexander Munn (1885-1981)

Charlie 'Mr. Palm Beach' Munn, of "Casa Amado" Palm Beach, Florida

He earned his first fortune by creating a mechanical mail-sorting machine. He later gained even greater success in the racetrack business by manufacturing and marketing pari-mutuel machines and owning several racing tracks in England. In 1919, he commissioned Addison Mizner to build him "Casa Amado" (see images), a 23,000 square-foot Mediterranean-style villa in Palm Beach with 10-bedrooms, 225-feet of ocean frontage, a pool, and a tennis court. It was recently sold for $148-million.
