She was adopted by her mother's second husband, Cornelius Vanderbilt Crane, and took the surname "Crane" but after they divorced in 1940 he disinherited her. Shortly afterwards she married the first of her three husbands, "Ned" Edward Tinsley Chase, and they were the parents of Chevy (Cornelius Crane) Chase who spent his summers at Castle Hill.
