Cadwallader Colden (1722-1797)

of "Coldenham" near Montgomery, Orange Co., New York

He built the "Coldenham" manor (see images) in 1767 on an estate of 3,000-acres that was deeded to him by his father. He was an ardent Loyalist who went to jail for his politics and as a result his estates in Queens County, Long Island, were confiscated. Nonetheless, he managed to retain "Coldenham" (now a ruin) and the stucco-covered stone house was described in 1959 as containing, "17-large rooms, nine open fire places, two bathrooms, a butler's pantry, three wide halls, 10-foot ceilings, etc.". It remained in his immediate family until circa 1850 when it was sold to the husband of one of their cousins, Lindley Murray Ferris. He had 8-children (listed) who survived infancy.
