Austin Ledyard Sands (1779-1859)

Merchant, of New York City

He was described as "a well-known merchant of New York City". His father died when he was four and he was brought up with his stepfather, General Ebenezer Stevens, and his younger half-siblings. He was a first cousin of Mrs Cornelia (Sands) Prime, wife of Nathaniel Prime who was listed among New York's five millionaires in 1830. He and his wife had seven children of whom four (listed) survived childhood. His second son, Samuel, founded the brokerage firm S.S. Sands & Co.
